Best Historic Hotel-
The Willard InterContinental celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006, as the “new” 12-story Willard, replacing the original, smaller “City Hotel” that existed here between 1816 and 1906. Whether known as the City or the Willard, the hotel has hosted nearly every U.S. president since Franklin Pierce in 1853, including two presidents who lived here for a time — Lincoln in 1861 and Calvin Coolidge in 1923. President Ulysses S. Grant liked to unwind with cigar and brandy in the Willard lobby after a hard day in the Oval Office, and literary luminaries like Mark Twain and Charles Dickens used to hang out in the Round Robin bar. The hotel continues to draw political, society, business, and cultural icons today.

Nearly one year ago, FlightSafety Academy initiated its relationship with Pilot Training College (PTC) Ireland by accepting seven Irish students from the affiliated school in Waterford, Ireland. Today, nearly 100 PTC students have successfully completed courses at the FlightSafety Academy’s campus in Vero Beach, Florida.

The agreement has provided a dual benefit for both schools. PTC students use FlightSafety’s facilities to earn their Private Pilot’s License (PPL) and build flight hours while FlightSafety’s students have the opportunity to convert their FAA licenses into the European Union equivalent, the Joint Aviation Authority (JAA) commercial pilot’s license.

“This strategic alliance for the Pilot Training College is a first for Ireland and is the only agreement of its kind to be signed so far,” said Capt. Mike Edgeworth, chief executive of the Pilot Training College. “FlightSafety International’s decision to partner with us is indicative of the high standards we have achieved in the past five years.”

FlightSafety enrolls an average of seven to 10 PTC students per month, totaling nearly 100 students for the first year. PTC students study on FlightSafety Academy’s campus for two months. Because of lower fuel costs, the absence of the Value Added Tax (VAT), and weather more conducive to flying, these students are able to earn their licenses more quickly for a better price.

With PTC’s FAA-JAA conversion course, FlightSafety students are able to begin the conversion process while still in America. The distance-learning portion takes approximately six months. After earning their U.S. license, they attend PTC for approximately three weeks to complete the JAA flying requirements.

“This relationship has brought about more than just an exchange of students,” said Jacqueline Carlon, FlightSafety Academy’s Senior Marketing Manager. “It has opened up opportunities for both schools, making it easier for our students to gain employment with international airlines while allowing PTC’s students to efficiently earn their licenses in less time for less money.”

The second year of operation is expected to bring new additions, including the approval of PTC Florida’s campus at FlightSafety as a JAA-approved center. This new designation will allow PTC students to train in Vero Beach for the JAA CPL/ME (European Commercial Multi-Engine license). Nearly all training would be conducted in Vero Beach (a duration of 10 months). As this new option becomes available, FlightSafety Academy expects PTC enrollments to increase to 17 monthly. In addition, FlightSafety students will be able to complete most of the FAA-JAA conversion course on FlightSafety’s campus with only one week of training in Ireland to complete the JAA IR (Instrument Rating).

PTC, a small, elite school with a solid reputation, is located at Waterford International Airport in southeast Ireland. The school trains pilots from 25 different countries; 98 percent of their graduates are employed by airlines within two months of completing their training. Their graduates are now employed by many airlines including RyanAir, Aer Arann, City Jet, Westair, Air Asia, and Club 328.
